Accepting and Adapting Change, Musically!
Change is the only constant and we all are taught to embrace it, however it is much easier said that done!
Try changing your diet, your lifestyle or simpler your brand of favourite cookies and one will realise how difficult it is to embrace change. When technology upgrades, our elders find it difficult to adapt to it and we have to constantly hand hold them till they are adept with the processes.
Now imagine this situation musically! Every generation has their set of likings and innovations. Pre-independence music era was all about encouraging youngsters to fight for freedom and when the country for independence and we started experiencing western influences in our music and culture, did the youngsters of that era not get to hear “Gaane To Hamare Zamane Me Hote The…”
This divide in generation gap will always remain and we can only suggest and recommend a few ways to help bridge the gap, like
- Accept with Open Arms:
Yes accepting change is not easy, but unless we invite newness with open arms, new will never become a part of the family. While not all new melodies be of your liking, there would be something that catches your attention. Why focussing on that for and openly acknowledge it. One word of appreciation always boost the morale!
- Explore Fusion:
If modern music is not your cup of tea, try blending the brews! Start with melodies which might give your familiar flavour and then slowly explore more modernness.
- Elders should trust their legacy and teachings:
We all are products of our elders, our values, principles and choices are definitely influenced by what we have grown up with. So trust your upbringing and value systems, next generation always takes inspiration from what’s already created.
- Youngsters to respect what’s behind them and what they are carrying forward:
Young blood might have its own ways of understanding and presenting, but as mentioned earlier we all are products of our elders, our values, principles and choices are definitely influenced by what we have grown up with. So respect that.
- Try Guided Listening Sessions
Explore dedicated music appreciating clubs that help one stay focused on only music and not distract visually. Guided listening is an art and these sessions are extremely helpful in helping listeners focus on key elements that make a song melodious and further explore unexplored gems, either hidden or forgotten.
While the world preaches accepting the change, try doing the same musically as well and feel the difference. The only way we can expect harmony is through music, isn’t it?
